Unleashing Potential, Fostering Resilience, and Driving Positive Change
THE TRAINING BRIEF
This organisation faced a significant challenge as its field staff lacked the necessary leadership skills to carry out their duties effectively. This deficiency hindered their ability to navigate complex compliance enforcement settings and fulfill the organisation's mission. Recognising the urgency of the situation, it became evident that a comprehensive training program was needed to equip the staff with the essential leadership capabilities required to excel in their roles.
THE TRAINING STRATEGY
To address the leadership skills gap, a strategic plan was formulated to provide the field staff with the training they needed. A recommendation was made for an immersive experience where the staff would be isolated for a week in a central location. The training program encompassed various elements, including operational planning, strategic direction, team-building exercises conducted by another organisation, and a fundamental model of leadership in compliance enforcement settings. The training methodology involved a combination of lecture-style sessions and outdoor education activities. These activities ranged from early morning excursions to basic walks, exploring Alpine crossings, and engaging in operational activities directly relevant to their core responsibilities. The program emphasised the importance of working comfortably in any environment, mirroring the unpredictable nature of fieldwork. By offering opportunities for physical activity, both before and after work, the participants were provided with a "challenge by choice" option while fostering their ability to adapt and excel in varying weather conditions.
TRAINING OUTCOMES
The outcomes of the leadership training program were highly positive and transformative for the field staff. Through debriefs and reflective meetings, the participants discovered the benefits of assuming leadership roles within their peer group, instilling them with newfound confidence and capability. The program exposed individuals to leadership responsibilities for extended periods, allowing them to showcase their skills and adaptability. The success of the initial training program led to its repetition, further reinforcing its effectiveness. The two successful runs of the program in the central North Island showcased the power of combining outdoor education with practical tasks aligned with the staff's daily responsibilities. The participants gained invaluable leadership experiences and developed the skills to excel in their fieldwork.
