The organisation's Compliance Team possessed the authority to arrest individuals involved in crimes related to the unlawful export of native species from New Zealand. However, despite some team members having prior law enforcement experience, they lacked the necessary skills to effectively carry out arrests and ensure the proper detention of suspects. The team recognised the importance of acquiring these essential skills, including handcuffing techniques and the duty of care required during the detention process. They enlisted an experienced trainer with expertise to develop a comprehensive training program to address these critical gaps.

The trainer initiated the training program by thoroughly understanding the team's lawful requirements and the specific authority granted to them. This involved identifying relevant legislation, establishing necessary policies, and outlining the key skills and equipment required for the effective execution of arrests. The multi-day training course proved highly effective in equipping the National Compliance Team with the necessary arrest and detention skills. Participants received comprehensive instruction on relevant legislation, proper equipment usage, and various handcuffing techniques, including front and rear applications, takedown manoeuvres, and handcuffing in prone positions.
